In attempting to evaluate the performance of a first grade child of foreign parentage, one is confronted with this problem: What allowance should be made for linguistic shortcomings?1 In the study presented here the authors were able to give the Detroit First Grade Tests, Form A, to some 340 children.2 The children speak either English or Italian or both and no other language groups are present.
